Tour Itinerary: 4-Day Sahara Discovery: Casablanca to Merzouga Desert Tour

Day 1: Casablanca – Rabat – Meknes – Fes

Your driver from Merzouga Tours will pick you up to begin your 4-day journey from Casablanca to the Sahara Desert. Our first stop is Rabat, the capital of Morocco, where we’ll visit the Kasbah of the Udayas and the iconic Hassan Tower.

Next, we head to Meknes, one of Morocco’s imperial cities, to explore landmarks such as the grand Bab El Mansour gate, the Moulay Ismail Mausoleum, and the tranquil Sahrij Souani basin.

We then continue on to Fes, where you’ll spend the night in a traditional Riad or hotel.

Day 2: Fes – Ifrane – Azrou – Midelt – Erfoud – Merzouga

After breakfast, we depart Fes at 8:00 AM and begin our scenic drive toward Merzouga, crossing the Middle Atlas Mountains.

We’ll pass through Ifrane, often called “Little Switzerland” for its European-style architecture, and continue to the cedar forest of Azrou, where you’ll have the chance to meet wild Barbary macaques in their natural habitat.

We break for lunch in Midelt, then follow the road through the dramatic Ziz Valley and its series of palm groves and fortified villages. In Erfoud, known for its fossils and marble workshops, we take a desert track that leads us to Merzouga.

Enjoy dinner and an overnight stay at a comfortable hotel near the edge of the dunes.

Day 3: Merzouga – Rissani – Todra Gorges – Dades Valley – Rose Valley

Wake early to catch the magical sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes, then return by camel to the hotel for breakfast and a quick shower.

We then head to Rissani, the birthplace of Morocco’s ruling dynasty, to visit the Zawiya of Moulay Ali Ash-Sharif and explore the bustling local souk. Afterward, we drive through Erfoud, the fossil capital, and make a stop at the traditional Khettaras (ancient irrigation systems).

We continue to the spectacular Todra Gorges, where you'll have time to walk along the river and admire cliffs that soar up to 300 meters high. After lunch in Tinghir or Tinejdad, we follow the Dades Valley, stopping to explore the unique rock formations famously known as “Monkey Fingers.”

Dinner and overnight in a charming Kasbah or hotel in the Dades Valley.

Day 4: Dades Valley – Rose Valley – Skoura – Ouarzazate – Ait Ben Haddou – Marrakech

After breakfast, we travel along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, passing through the fragrant Valley of Roses and the palm oasis of Skoura. Our next stop is Ouarzazate, known as the “Hollywood of Africa,” where many famous films have been shot.

We visit the iconic Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the most impressive ksar (fortified village) in Morocco.

After lunch, we begin our ascent through the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260 meters). Along the way, we’ll enjoy panoramic views, stop at scenic viewpoints, and visit a local Argan oil cooperative.
